Labour Department gets tough on employers

The department of Labour has decided to take drastic measures in defense of the workers of South Africa. Jimmy Manyi who is the director of the department vowed to prosecute all employers who underpay their employees.

The department recognizes the fact that many employees in this country are still earning salaries way below the expected figures. The sectors that are affected the most are retail, domestic workers, security industries and restaurants. Those employers who underpay their employees will be taken to Labour court so that they will face the music.

The department has increased the number of inspectors from 600 to 1000. These will have a responsibility of visiting different sectors in order to ensure that there is compliance.

Cosatu welcomed this decision by the Labour Department and added that the inspectors must be highly qualified and motivated to be prepared to deal with firms that fail to comply.
