Just few weeks after the completion of phase on of the renewal of Cape Town Station, the Century City station was opened for the first time on Tuesday. The opening took place a day before the World Cup kick off. This is good news to lacal commuters but also international tourists who are here for the World Cup.
The construction of the Century City station is aimed at increasing rail usage by tourist which will showcase our country's infrastructure readiness. This will send a message to the worls that South Africa is on a path to compete globally. The station will also have a positive impact in reducing traffic congestion on N1 highway to and from Cape Town.
This project is in line with the BRT project nearing its completition stages around Cape Town. Parklands is one of many suburbs that will benefit from the BRT project as it will reduce traffic congestion while offering communters with fast mode of transport to and from Cape Town.Montana said Prasa was proud of the new Century City Station which would form part of the Bellville, Monte Vista and Cape Town line. Once commuters disembarked from the train, they would take a shuttle service to Century City.
The new station is expected to service about 20 000 commuters during peak hours.In the reconstruction of the R470m Cape Town Station undertaken by Intersite Property Management Services, the station's internal structures were demolished, opening it up completely. Some key features of the station include CCTV cameras in the concourse and on platforms, signage, electronic message boards and a food court. Permanent units on the station's deck for traders were also being built.
