Having read and come across a number of articles relating to problems facing Cope, I have come to a conclusion that Cope if facing a dilemma. Cope leadership has denied this for a long time now but only a fool will fail to realise that these problems are not a way to go if any political party is to survive. But what is the main problem facing Cope? I suspect that their problem lies in the leadership. There are many other areas that one can point out, like their lack of vision, but it is clear that the leadership of Cope is not decisive enough.
Their first blunder was during the election when they had a huge confusion about who was to lead the party throughout the election campaign.
During the election Cope set their target too high and I thing that it was not a realistic goal that they could achieve taking into consideration that they were still new. The election results proved them wrong which showed everyone that there was something wrong in their strategy and how they approached things.
I learnt yesterday that the party has already started retrenching some of its leadership. These leaders were fired for having arranged a meeting to voice out their unhappiness with the party. So why are they fired then. Well the explanation to that is that the meeting was not official.
When Cope was formed many people who joined it did that because they were not happy about the ANC. Most of these were people whom I think understood politics to be about career so they were seeking career alternatives. They held a number of events like cheese and wine party held in Cape Town. I am told there were many other such events with the purpose of either celebrating or attracting people most of whom are academics. So why are these academics failing to make decisions?

Serious questions have been asked about whether the former Pres. Thabo Mbeki is also a member of Cope. There was not clear answer about that and we saw Julius Malema challenging the man to come out. On the other side Mbeki maintained that he was still supporting the ANC although he did not take part during the election campaign.
It is very interesting to see if Cope will survive the storm or not and what will the party leadership do to assure it members that the party will still see the light!!!
